The very first thing you need to do is create our art board. In this case we are embossing a business card, so our art board is 3.5″ x 2″ plus an 1/8″ for bleed. Make sure your raster effects resolution is set to at least 300dpi and the colour mode is in CMYK. Once your file has opened, we are ready to start laying out our artwork…

Many’s the time I’ve thought, ‘You know what New York City could use more of? Bling.’ Or maybe I haven’t thought that. Still, after seeing artist Rafael Esquer’s startling print “Iconic New York Illuminated,” perhaps I should’ve been thinking that all along. Comprised of more than 600 icons meant to evoke key aspects of the city, this piece is a riot of gorgeous detail. While admittedly a bit of shock when seen from far away, close examination of this artwork is certain to leave even the most jaded art lover in awe. As the print’s Alfalfa New York page warns us: “Look for pizza-rat in the East Village, the Miracle on the Hudson, a diamond-garnished martini for only ,000, and a few legally topless women wandering about. And around every corner, watch out for pedestrians, prams, poodles, and pretzels!”
As is so often the case, a mesmerizing print begins by selecting the absolute perfect sheet upon which to show off your design. Here we see the four different metallic inks, and gold and silver foil beautifully set off by plush and plastic-like Neenah Slide, which provides a one-of-a-kind tactile sensation. (You’ll find Slide in Neenah’s Design Collection.)
Just when you think you know New York City inside and out, a print comes along to play up the glimmer of a city already famous for its radiance.

This is an extra-long Illustrator tutorial that will show you how to create a business card in Adobe Illustrator from start to finish, and get it ready for printing.
You need a business card printed – maybe you don’t have a logo yet – but you have Illustrator and Photoshop and you need to get started. This tutorial will show you how to set up and design your card, and also how to prepare it for printing with any printer you choose. I cover CMYK, high resolution images and Bleed in this tutorial as well as offer a few design tips as we go to help you have a professional, finished look.
Remember: Business cards with bleed must be sized 3.625 x 2.125 for any printer. They must be CMYK (not RGB) and include high resolution (300 dpi) photographs.
